Food Allergies and Intolerances
Some children are sensitive or have an allergy to particular foods, such as peanuts, egg, soy, sesame, and milk. The symptoms can include breathing difficulties, stomach pain and skin rashes. Food allergies are caused by an immune system response or a chemical reaction in the body. Some severe food allergies can be life threatening, known as anaphylaxis.
Many schools will have a policy regarding particular foods that cannot be brought into the school grounds, such as peanuts and eggs. Please contact your child's school to find out more information.
Food intolerance is a ‘chemical’ reaction that some people have after eating or drinking some foods; it is not an immune response.
If your child does have an allergy or intolerance it is important to beware of food they should avoid and inform your school as well anyone else that might be around your child, especially if your child is staying at a friend’s house.
